Successful Newborn Photos with Pets

Fur babies are the best, but when it comes to photographing your little infant with them it’s important to hire someone who knows what they are doing. As a newborn photographer, safety is always the most important.  Below are my top 5 tips for getting those newborn photos with dogs and cats safety in the comfort of your home.

#1 Know the Pets Energy.

This should be obvious, but I always have that  conversation with my clients so I know the temperament and personality of their pet. Poses with the baby will vary depending on the energy level of the animal. For example, if a dog is very young and full of energy, it may be a better idea to get a photo of the family walking with the dog while a parent holds the newborn.

#2 Lifestyle photos are meant for pets.

What does life look like at home when I am not there? Forcing animals to pose rarely works, instead my style is more natural. I am there to document the realness. I love to help guide natural moments, for example I may have parents hold the baby on the couch while they give belly rubs to their dog. We go with the flow! Pets can come up on the bed, or not. I always follow parents lead.

#3 Crib shots with baby and animals are a must.

Pictures of a pet looking at the baby are classic, safe and simple to do. I always will suggest these photos

#4 Treats and Toys sometimes help, and sometimes don’t.

A squeaky toy or treat can really help capture a dog looking right into the camera, however it can also cause the animal to get too excited. This is why it is so important that there is a clear plan on when to use treats or toys.

#5 Sometimes I say NO for safety.

I am a mom of 2 dogs, and a mom of 3 kids. Safety is number one, period. If a dog is untrained or very hyper we will not be doing photos of baby right next to the dog, it’s simply not safe. My priority is the well being of the baby at all times. That does not mean we won’t get good family photos with the pet, but it does mean I won’t be getting close ups of the pet right next to the baby, and that’s ok.
