Prepping for a one-year-old cake smash session is key to having success. As a baby photographer, it’s essential that I work with parents to plan the session well in advance. Below are some of the must-have items that I bring to almost every cake smash session. I offer a complete milestone prep guide to all my clients who are interested in a one-year-old photoshoot.

Baby Wipes
Baby Wipes are so needed when you incorporate a toddler and a messy cake. I always introduce the cake during the last 10 minutes of the session simply because once the baby is messy, it is hard to turn back. Some one-year-olds go all out and gobble it up, while other toddlers simply stare at the cake, unsure of what to do. Whatever the case may be, as your milestone photographer, I come prepared. I always bring baby wipes and water if we need it.

ONE signs
Simple, timeless ONE signs are great. I have different signs to choose from. It is a perfect way to put a timestamp on your picture of your little baby. In my milestone guide, I offer a variety of custom signs, and parents can choose more than one.

Vintage-style high chair
I have two custom vintage-style high chairs that are ideal for one-year milestone and cake-smash sessions. They are made of wood, and I love to use them in sessions by hanging a banner from them or simply placing the cake directly on them.

Baskets, Bowls, Crates, Chairs
Everything I bring is toddler-sized to fit your baby! Some toddlers dislike sitting in a chair or basket, so I offer them the option to stand and hold the chair for a different look. It is important that I capture personality and variety in your images, so I tend to bring lots of options. I offer a variety of inventory, from boho to classic styles, to fit any parent’s vision.

Blankets & Rugs
Safety is number one, and if we are doing an outdoor session in Texas, there are bugs. I always come prepared and bring blankets or rugs.

Wooden Spoon
This is a classic here. You never know how your child will respond to the cake. Some babies love it and go all in to destroy right away, while others are much more timid. I always bring a wooden spoon to use in case we need it. The spoon moms can use to help feed the baby, or the toddler can hold the spoon by themselves to try it.
Cake Stand
We can put the cake on the ground, on a basket, or on a stand. Just know I have options for different cake stands that I am happy to bring to a session. Also, please know my cake stands are custom and sized for a toddler. They are ideal for 8 to 10-inch cakes.
Location and Milestone Guide
Whether we do the session indoors or outdoors, I offer options. Although this isn’t something I bring to the session, I offer it well in advance to prepare for one-year-old photo shoots. I offer a variety of outdoor locations and studio options based on your vision and location.
Decor
My photography style is timeless and simple, but if you are looking for a more themed photoshoot, I am happy to help. I have a variety of props and offer complete decor for full milestone sessions.
