When planning a family photography session in Austin, Belton, or Central Texas, choosing the right location is about so much more than finding a pretty field.
As a Central Texas family photographer, scouting is an important part of how I plan each session. Texas landscapes are constantly changing- wildflowers bloom and disappear, rivers rise and fall, fields change with the seasons, and the light shifts throughout the year.
A location I love in April with all the bluebonnets will look completely different by August.
Texas Wildflower

Spring is one of my most favorite seasons for family photography in Central Texas. Bluebonnets and other Texas wildflowers make beautiful backdrops for family, maternity, motherhood, and milestone sessions.
But wildflower season is tricky. Rainfall, drought, mowing, and weather can change a location from one year- or even one week-to the next.
That’s why I scout. I am not just looking for flowers; I am looking for beautiful light, open space, accessibility, and a setting that simply photographs well.
Sunset, Sunrise & That Texas Light

Light can completely transform a location.
When scouting photography locations around Austin and Belton, I pay attention to where the sun rises and sets, where light falls through the trees, and whether we’ll have an open horizon for those beautiful Texas skies.
Some locations are magical at sunset while others are much better at sunrise. Even the season can change how favorite location photographs.
Choosing the right time is just as important as choosing the right place.
Water, Wind & Texas Weather

Central Texas weather plays a huge role in outdoor photography.
Water levels can completely transform rivers, creeks, and rocky shorelines. A stunning spot may be easily accessible one month and underwater- or completely dry- the next.
Wind matters, too. A gentle breeze moving through a dress, hair, or tall grass can be beautiful, while heavy wind can make a session difficult, especially with young children.
Finding a Location That Works for Your Family

The prettiest location isn’t always the right spot.
Some of my favorite Central Texas spots involve rocky terrain, hills, uneven trails, water, or longer hikes. They may be perfect or longer walks. They may be perfect for an adventurous couple or family with older children but not ideal for toddlers, someone lake in pregnancy, or grandparents with limited mobility.
When planning your session, I consider terrain, walking distance, parking, accessibility, and safety so we can choose somewhere that allows your family to relax and enjoy the experience.
Flooding in Central Texas

Heavy rainfall can quickly change outdoor photography locations in the Austin area.
Trails, river crossings, creek beds, parks, and low-water areas can be come muddy or inaccessible. Sometimes that means changing our original plan- and that’s okay.
Part of my job is knowing when a location isn’t the best option anymore and having another beautiful place in mind.
It’s All Part of the Experience

When you book a Central Texas family photography session with me, you’re not simply hiring someone to show up with a camera.
I’m thinking about the light, weather, wildflowers, water, terrain, accessibility, and what will work best for your family before you ever arrives.
Because the perfect location is not always the most popular spot.
It’s the place where stunning light, the Texas landscape, and your family all come together naturally.
