Newborn lifestyle photoshoots start with a home, a baby, and my camera. It’s a simple session filled with love and snuggles during this short stage in life. I have photographed over 100 newborns, and every single family is unique, including their home. You don’t have to have the brightest home for newborn photos, but lighting is something I always focus on to create beautiful images.
So why is natural light important?
Natural light coming into the home results in great lit photographs that have a natural feel to them. I always bring my flash and use it sometimes, but those natural light shots are always my favorite. I love the realness and those shadows that light creates in photos.
First, before a newborn photography session, I ask my clients what time of day their home is the brightest to schedule the session during that time. When I arrive, the first thing I do is take a tour around the house. I look for windows and well-lit rooms. I always suggest to clients where photos should be taken, ideally in areas with the best light. Sometimes that space may be the guest bedroom or a simple corner of the home.
What if my home is dark?
If your home is like mine and not very bright, do not worry; I always find a way to get creative. I open the windows and doors if needed to get those natural lit shots. I love rolling a bassinet near a window and taking photos of the sweet little baby with the sun coming in. I love it when I find a harsh sunray peaking into the home and placing mom and baby at the center of the ray. I also use my flash to fill in light when needed. Many families like to take photos of their baby on the bed, but sometimes the bedroom is dark. To overcome this, I open all the windows and use a small flash.
